Two boys find themselves fighting for their lives against a bio-engineered wolf in the back acre behind their homes. Bound by a friendship as deep as brotherhood, they face the danger together, relying on each other survive the night. But when the older, more confident “alpha” boy is seriously injured, his friend must overcome his fear and find the courage to protect them both. What begins as a fight for survival becomes a powerful coming-of-age journey, testing a bond that means more to them than either could have imagined.

Two neighboring families—one seemingly stable, the other deeply dysfunctional—raise boys who grow up side by side, shaped in very different ways by the environments around them. As they approach high school graduation, one student shoots another, forcing the boys and their families to confront the consequences of the worlds they have created—and raising the question of whether one of the boys will make it to graduation at all.
